  • It heterodimerizes with ARNT to bind the hypoxia response element (HRE) in target gene promoters, activating genes involved in oxygen homeostasis.
  • EPAS1 plays a pivotal role in angiogenesis by regulating vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expression and is essential for vascular development and remodeling.
  • It is selectively expressed in endothelial cells and found at highest levels in placenta, lung, and heart tissues.
  • The protein localizes predominantly to the nucleus and nuclear speckles, where its transcriptional activity is modulated by post-translational modifications such as hydroxylation and phosphorylation.
