Biological Background: EHMT1 Function and Localization

  • EHMT1 (also known as GLP, G9a-like protein 1) is a histone-lysine N-methyltransferase that specifically catalyzes the mono-, di- and trimethylation of histone H3 at lysine 9 (H3K9me1/2/3) in euchromatin, a hallmark of transcriptional repression. Related references: PMID:12004135

  • Through H3K9 methylation, EHMT1 recruits heterochromatin protein 1 (HP1) to methylated histones, establishing repressive chromatin domains. It also weakly methylates histone H3 at lysine 27 (H3K27me). Related references: PMID:12004135
