Biological Background: DNMT1 Function and Localization
- Protein Identity and Isoforms: DNMT1 (DNA (cytosine-5)-methyltransferase 1) is a CXXC-type zinc finger protein with aliases MCMT, CXXC9, and DNA methyltransferase HsaI. Multiple isoforms exist; isoform 2 is less expressed than the canonical isoform 1.
- Maintenance DNA Methylation: Functions as the primary maintenance DNA methyltransferase, preferentially methylating hemimethylated CpG sites to preserve methylation patterns during DNA replication.
