Biological Background: Cytokeratin 20 (KRT20) Function and Localization

• Keratin, type I cytoskeletal 20 (KRT20), also known as Cytokeratin-20 (CK-20), Keratin-20 (K20), or Protein IT, is a type I keratin intermediate filament protein.
• It plays a significant role in maintaining keratin filament organization in intestinal epithelia. When phosphorylated, KRT20 is involved in the secretion of mucin in the small intestine (By similarity).
• Subcellular localization is cytoplasmic, consistent with its role as a cytoskeletal component.
• Predominantly expressed in intestinal epithelium, with specific localization in luminal cells of colonic mucosa. Additionally expressed in Merkel cells of keratinized oral mucosa, including gingival rete ridges, palatal basal layer, and lingual taste buds.
