Biological Background: CYBRD1 Function and Localization
- CYBRD1, also known as duodenal cytochrome b (DCYTB), is a member of the cytochrome b561 family, characterized by heme binding and multiple transmembrane domains.
- Acts as a plasma membrane ascorbate-dependent ferrireductase, converting extracellular Fe3+ to Fe2+ for dietary iron absorption in duodenal enterocytes. Related references: PMID:30272000
- Reduces extracellular monodehydro-L-ascorbate, potentially participating in ascorbate regeneration by erythrocytes. Related references: PMID:17068337
- May also function as a cupric transmembrane reductase and as a ferrireductase in airway epithelial cells.
- Localizes at the apical cell membrane of duodenal enterocytes and is present in erythrocyte membranes.
- Detected at the protein level in erythrocyte membranes and also expressed in respiratory epithelium.
