Biological Background: Complement factor D Function and Localization
- Complement factor D (CFD; aliases: Adipsin, Properdin factor D, DF, ADN, PFD) is a secreted serine protease of the peptidase S1 family. It circulates as a zymogen and is activated by N-terminal propeptide cleavage.
- As the rate-limiting enzyme of the alternative complement pathway, CFD specifically cleaves factor B (CFB) when bound to C3b, forming the C3 convertase C3bBb.
