Biological Background: Complement C3 Function and Localization
- Complement C3 is a large glycoprotein (∼187 kDa) primarily synthesized in the liver and secreted into plasma, with additional production by adipocytes during both fasting and postprandial periods.
- As a central hub of the complement cascade, C3 is cleaved by C3 convertase to generate C3b, which covalently attaches to pathogen surfaces via its reactive thioester bond (PubMed:6903192).
