- Collagen alpha-2(I) chain, encoded by the COL1A2 gene, is a component of type I collagen, a fibrillar-forming collagen belonging to the group I collagen family.
- Type I collagen is the most abundant collagen in vertebrates and serves as the major structural protein of the extracellular matrix, providing tensile strength to connective tissues.
- It forms the fibrils of tendons, ligaments, and bones; in bones, these fibrils are mineralized with calcium hydroxyapatite, contributing to tissue stiffness and load-bearing capacity.
