Biological Background: COL4A3BP Function and Localization

  • COL4A3BP is a ceramide transfer protein (CERT) also known as Goodpasture antigen-binding protein (GPBP) and START domain-containing protein 11 (STARD11). It is encoded by the CERT1 gene and has a molecular weight of ~71 kDa (UniProt: 70835 Da). Multiple isoforms may be generated via alternative splicing.
  • As a key lipid transfer protein, it shelters ceramides within its steroidogenic acute regulatory lipid transfer (START) domain and mediates their non-vesicular trafficking from the endoplasmic reticulum to the Golgi apparatus for conversion to sphingomyelin.   • Additionally, it can transfer diacylglycerol, although with very low efficiency. Related references: PMID:18184806
