Biological Background: Claudin-4 Function and Localization
- Claudin-4, encoded by the CLDN4 gene, is a member of the claudin family of tight junction proteins and also functions as the Clostridium perfringens enterotoxin receptor (CPE-R).
- It localizes to tight junctions at cell–cell contacts and is embedded in the cell membrane, consistent with its role in paracellular barrier and ion transport.
