- CHMP1A (charged multivesicular body protein 1a), also known as chromatin-modifying protein 1a, is a peripheral component of the endosomal sorting complex required for transport III (ESCRT-III).
- It plays a central role in multivesicular body (MVB) formation and sorting of endosomal cargo proteins into intraluminal vesicles (ILVs) for subsequent lysosomal degradation.
- CHMP1A participates in topologically equivalent membrane fission events, including the terminal stages of cytokinesis and the budding of enveloped viruses such as HIV-1.
- It recruits the AAA ATPase VPS4A and/or VPS4B to the midbody of dividing cells and may also be involved in chromosome condensation.
- CHMP1A targets the Polycomb group protein BMI1/PCGF4 to regions of condensed chromatin, thereby contributing to PcG gene silencing and stable cell cycle progression.
- The protein localizes to the cytoplasm, endosome membrane, and nuclear matrix, and is expressed in placenta, skin fibroblasts, and osteoblasts.
