Biological Background: CHCHD3 Function and Localization
- Encoded by the CHCHD3 gene, Coiled-coil-helix-coiled-coil-helix domain-containing protein 3 (also known as Mic19) is a key component of the mitochondrial contact site and cristae organizing system (MICOS) complex.
- As a core MICOS subunit, CHCHD3 is crucial for maintaining crista junction architecture, inner membrane organization, and contact site formation with the outer membrane, thereby stabilizing the MICOS complex and preserving mitochondrial cristae morphology.
