Biological Background: Ceruloplasmin Function and Localization
- Ceruloplasmin is a multifunctional blue copper-binding glycoprotein containing 6-7 copper atoms per molecule. Its primary ferroxidase activity oxidizes Fe2+ to Fe3+ without releasing radical oxygen species, a critical step in iron transport across cell membranes. Related references: PMID:16150804
