Biological Background: CELF1 Function and Localization

• CELF1 (CUGBP Elav-like family member 1) is a 52 kDa RNA-binding protein that regulates post-transcriptional events including pre-mRNA alternative splicing, mRNA translation, and mRNA stability.
• It mediates exon inclusion and/or exclusion in a tissue-specific and developmentally regulated manner. For example, it activates exon 5 inclusion of cardiac TNNT2 during heart remodeling and controls the alternative splicing of actinin and INSR pre-mRNAs.
