Biological Background: CD98 Function and Localization
- Protein identity and aliases: CD98 is the heavy chain of the amino acid transporter, also known as solute carrier family 3 member 2 (SLC3A2) or 4F2hc. It acts as a chaperone for SLC7 family light chains.
- Core amino acid transport function: CD98 forms heterodimers with various SLC7 transporters (e.g., SLC7A5, SLC7A6, SLC7A7, SLC7A8, SLC7A10, and SLC7A11) to mediate amino acid exchange across the plasma membrane. The substrate specificity depends on the SLC7A subunit; for example, SLC3A2/SLC7A11 exchanges extracellular cystine for intracellular glutamate, while SLC3A2/SLC7A5 transports large neutral amino acids, thyroid hormones, and L-DOPA.
