  • CD90 (Thy-1) is a cell surface glycoprotein also designated CDw90, encoded by the THY1 gene in humans (UniProt P04216).
  • It belongs to the immunoglobulin superfamily, characterized by an immunoglobulin-like domain, and is anchored to the plasma membrane via a glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI) anchor.
  • The protein undergoes several post-translational modifications, including N-linked glycosylation, disulfide bond formation, phosphorylation, and the addition of a GPI anchor; the signal peptide is cleaved and the N-terminal glutamine cyclized to pyroglutamic acid.
  • Subcellularly, CD90 is localized to the cell membrane where it may participate in cell-cell and cell-ligand interactions.
  • Functional studies suggest a role in synaptogenesis and other events in the brain, potentially mediating adhesion and signaling between neurons and glial cells.
  • The mature protein has a predicted molecular weight of approximately 18 kDa.
