  • CD79a, also known as Ig-alpha, MB-1 membrane glycoprotein, or CD79a, is the B-cell antigen receptor complex-associated protein alpha chain.
  • It is required together with CD79B for the initiation of signal transduction following antigen binding to the B-cell receptor (BCR), leading to internalization, trafficking to late endosomes, and antigen presentation.
  • CD79a is essential for BCR surface expression and for efficient differentiation of pro- and pre-B-cells.
  • It stimulates SYK autophosphorylation and activation, and binds BLNK to bring it into proximity with SYK for phosphorylation, thereby mediating downstream signaling.
  • CD79a also interacts with and enhances the activity of some Src-family tyrosine kinases and represses BCR signaling during immature B-cell development.
  • The protein localizes to the cell membrane and is specifically expressed in B-cells.
