Biological Background: CD34 Function and Localization

• CD34, known as hematopoietic progenitor cell antigen, is a cell surface glycoprotein that functions as an adhesion molecule in early hematopoiesis, facilitating stem cell attachment to bone marrow extracellular matrix or stromal cells. It also acts as a scaffold for lineage-specific glycans and presents carbohydrate ligands to selectins.
• The protein is localized to the plasma membrane, consistent with a single-pass type I transmembrane topology.
• Multiple isoforms are generated through alternative splicing, contributing to functional diversity.
