- Encodes a cell surface glycoprotein involved in cell adhesion and endothelial monolayer cohesion at intercellular junctions in vascular tissue.
- Acts as a surface receptor triggering tyrosine phosphorylation of FYN and PTK2/FAK1, and a transient increase in intracellular calcium concentration.
- Enhances hematogenous tumor spread; expression is associated with melanoma progression and metastasis, detected strongly on metastatic lesions and advanced primary tumors.
- Localized to the plasma membrane (single-pass type I membrane protein); detected in endothelial cells, vascular smooth muscle, and neural crest cells during embryonic development.
- Contains immunoglobulin-like domains and belongs to the immunoglobulin superfamily; undergoes alternative splicing producing multiple isoforms.
