Biological Background: Cathepsin B Function and Localization
- Gene and Protein Identity: Cathepsin B (CTSB, also known as APP secretase, Cathepsin B1, CPSB) is a lysosomal cysteine protease encoded by the CTSB gene on human chromosome 8p23.1. It belongs to the peptidase C1 family.
- Protease Activity: Acts as a thiol protease involved in intracellular protein degradation and turnover. It cleaves matrix extracellular phosphoglycoprotein (MEPE) and participates in thyroglobulin solubilization in the thyroid.
