• C4BPA, also known as proline-rich protein (PRP), is the alpha chain of the C4b-binding protein complex, a pivotal regulator of the classical complement pathway.
• It acts as a cofactor for complement factor I (C3bINA) to cleave and inactivate complement fragment C4b.
• C4BPA accelerates the decay of the classical pathway C3 convertase (C4bC2a) by dissociating the C2a subunit.
• The protein is secreted and found associated with chylomicrons in blood plasma.
• C4BPA interacts with anticoagulant protein S and serum amyloid P component, linking complement regulation to coagulation and innate immunity.
