- It belongs to the Bcl-2 family and functions as a pro-apoptotic effector, directly oligomerizing to form pores in the MOM.
- BAK is localized to the mitochondrial outer membrane, consistent with its apoptotic function at this organelle.
- It is widely expressed across tissues, with notably high levels in the heart and skeletal muscle.
