Biological Background: BAAT Function and Localization
- BAAT (bile acid-CoA:amino acid N-acyltransferase), also known as BAT, HCHO, BACAT, BACD1, is a key enzyme in bile acid metabolism.
- It catalyzes the conjugation (amidation) of bile acids with glycine or taurine, which promotes bile acid and cholesterol secretion into bile and enhances intestinal lipid absorption. Related references: PMID:12810727, PMID:2037576
- BAAT also functions as an acyl-CoA thioesterase, hydrolyzing long-chain and very long-chain fatty acyl-CoAs to free fatty acids, thus regulating intracellular lipid levels. Related references: PMID:12239217, PMID:12810727, PMID:8034703
