Biological Background: B4GALT1 Function and Localization
- B4GALT1 encodes beta-1,4-galactosyltransferase 1, a key glycosyltransferase that catalyzes the transfer of galactose from UDP-galactose to terminal N-acetylglucosamine residues on glycoproteins and glycolipids in the Golgi apparatus, essential for complex N-glycan biosynthesis and antibody Fc glycosylation. - In conjunction with alpha-lactalbumin (LALBA), B4GALT1 forms the lactose synthase complex in the mammary gland, switching its acceptor specificity from GlcNAc to glucose to produce lactose during lactation. Related references: PMID:16157350
- The protein exists in multiple forms: a Golgi-resident transmembrane form, a cell surface form involved in cell–cell and cell–matrix adhesion, and a secreted form capable of extracellular glycan remodeling.
