Biological Background: B4GALT1 Function and Localization

  • B4GALT1 (Beta-1,4-galactosyltransferase 1) is a membrane-bound enzyme located in the Golgi stacks. It catalyzes the transfer of galactose to N-acetylglucosamine on glycolipids and N-glycans, essential for synthesizing complex-type N-linked glycans.   • The enzyme specifically adds galactose to both antennae of complex N-glycans, enabling mono- and di-galactosylated glycoforms. On immunoglobulin G (IgG), this galactosylation is a prerequisite for subsequent sialylation, which imparts anti-inflammatory properties.
