Biological Background: ATP5A1 Function and Localization
- ATP5A1 encodes the alpha subunit of mitochondrial ATP synthase (Complex V), which synthesizes ATP from ADP using the proton gradient generated by the electron transport chain. Related references: PMID:37244256
- Together with the catalytic subunit beta (ATP5F1B), it forms the catalytic core of the F1 domain; however, subunit alpha does not bear the catalytic high-affinity ATP-binding sites. Related references: PMID:37244256
- Binds the bacterial siderophore enterobactin and can promote mitochondrial accumulation of enterobactin-derived iron ions. Related references: PMID:30146159
- Located primarily in the mitochondrial inner membrane, but also reported at the cell membrane.
