Biological Background: ATP2B1 Function and Localization
- ATP2B1 encodes the plasma membrane calcium-transporting ATPase 1 (PMCA1), a member of the P-type ATPase family. It exists in multiple isoforms (B, C, D, K) generated by alternative splicing.
- Catalyzes ATP-driven calcium efflux from the cytoplasm to the extracellular space, crucial for maintaining intracellular calcium homeostasis. Related references: PMID:35358416
- Plays a key role in blood pressure regulation by modulating intracellular calcium and nitric oxide production in vascular smooth muscle cells.
- Positively regulates bone mineralization by promoting intestinal calcium absorption, and has dual roles in osteoclast differentiation and survival (by similarity).
