Biological Background: ATOH8 Function and Localization
- ATOH8 is a basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) transcription factor, also referred to as bHLHa21 or hATH6.
- It binds to the canonical E-box DNA sequence 5'-CANNTG-3', possibly as a heterodimer with other bHLH proteins, to regulate gene transcription. Related references: PMID:24236640
- ATOH8 regulates endothelial cell proliferation, migration, and tube-like structure formation, and modulates endothelial cell differentiation through NOS3. Related references: PMID:24463812
- It may participate in neuronal cell lineage specification in the brain, kidney development, and podocyte differentiation, and modulates NEUROG3-initiated differentiation programs.
- During myogenesis, ATOH8 may play a role in the transition from myoblast proliferation to differentiation.
