Biological Background: ATG4C Function and Localization
- ATG4C is a cysteine protease belonging to the ATG4 family, which includes ATG4A, ATG4B, and ATG4D, with distinct substrate specificities.
- It plays a dual role in autophagy: proteolytic activation of ATG8 family proteins (cleaving C-terminal residues to expose glycine) and delipidation of PE-conjugated ATG8 proteins. Related references: PMID:21177865 PMID:29458288 PMID:30661429
- Compared to ATG4B, ATG4C shows weaker proteolytic activation but stronger delipidation activity. Related references: PMID:29458288
- It localizes to the cytoplasm.
