- ATF3 (Cyclic AMP-dependent transcription factor ATF-3, also known as Activating transcription factor 3) is a member of the ATF/CREB family of transcription factors.
- It binds the cAMP response element (CRE) consensus sequence 5'-GTGACGT[AC][AG]-3', present in many viral and cellular promoters, and functions as a transcriptional repressor of promoters with ATF sites, possibly by stabilizing inhibitory cofactors.
- Alternatively, ATF3 can activate transcription by sequestering inhibitory cofactors away from promoters.
- A stress-induced isoform of ATF3 exists that counteracts the transcriptional repression activity of isoform 1.
- ATF3 is localized to the nucleus, consistent with its role in transcriptional regulation.
- Post-translational modifications and keywords include: phosphoprotein, Ubl conjugation, isopeptide bond, and alternative splicing.
