Biological Background: ATF2 Function and Localization
- ATF2 (Cyclic AMP-dependent transcription factor ATF-2) is also known as CREB-2, HB16, TREB7, and CRE-BP1. It belongs to the ATF/CREB family of transcription factors.
- It functions as a transcriptional activator, binding to CRE (5'-TGACGTCA-3') or AP-1 (5'-TGACTCA-3') consensus sequences, depending on its binding partner.
- ATF2 regulates genes involved in anti-apoptosis, cell growth, and the DNA damage response. It can exhibit both oncogenic and tumor suppressor activities depending on tissue context.
- In the nucleus, ATF2 contributes to global transcription and DNA damage response. In the cytoplasm, it interacts with mitochondrial complexes to perturb membrane potential and promote cell death.
