Biological Background: MANF (ARMET/ARP) Function and Localization
- Mesencephalic astrocyte-derived neurotrophic factor (MANF), also known as Arginine-rich protein (ARMET/ARP), is a secreted neurotrophic factor that promotes the survival of dopaminergic neurons and modulates GABAergic transmission in the substantia nigra. Related references: PMID:12794311
- MANF inhibits cell proliferation and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress-induced cell death. It is retained in the ER/sarcoplasmic reticulum through association with the chaperone HSPA5/BiP under normal conditions and is secreted upon ER stress.
