Biological Background: APC Function and Localization
- APC (adenomatous polyposis coli) is a tumor suppressor protein encoded by the APC gene, also referred to as DP2.5, GS, BTPS2, and PPP1R46.
- It functions as a negative regulator of the Wnt signaling pathway by promoting the degradation of beta-catenin (CTNNB1); its activity is modulated by phosphorylation.
- APC associates with both microtubules and actin filaments, mediating F-actin bundling and stabilizing microtubules through interactions with ERBB2 and MACF1. Related references: PMID:17293347
- The protein is localized to adherens junctions, the cytoplasm, cytoskeleton, cell membrane, and cell projections like lamellipodia and ruffles.

- APC also participates in HGF-induced cell migration and contributes to MMP9 up-regulation via JNK signaling in colorectal tumor cells.
