- Encodes methylmalonate-semialdehyde/malonate-semialdehyde dehydrogenase [acylating], a mitochondrial enzyme belonging to the aldehyde dehydrogenase family 6 (ALDH6A1).
- Catalyzes the oxidative decarboxylation of malonate and methylmalonate semialdehydes to acetyl-CoA and propionyl-CoA, respectively.
- Plays a central role in the catabolic pathways of valine and thymine, as well as the degradation of uracil and cytidine via the beta-alanine pathway.
- Localized within the mitochondrial matrix, consistent with its role in oxidative metabolism.
- Post-translationally modified by acetylation and phosphorylation, as identified in proteomics studies.
- Exhibits alternative splicing, with disease-associated variants recorded; classified as an NAD-dependent oxidoreductase.
