- ALDH5A1 encodes succinate-semialdehyde dehydrogenase, mitochondrial, a member of the aldehyde dehydrogenase family.
- Catalyzes the oxidation of succinic semialdehyde to succinate, a critical step in the degradation of the inhibitory neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA).
- Localizes primarily to mitochondria, as indicated by its mitochondrial transit peptide.
- Highly expressed in brain, pancreas, heart, liver, skeletal muscle, and kidney, with lower levels in placenta.
- Subject to post-translational modifications including acetylation and phosphorylation.
