Biological Background: ALDH3A1 Function and Localization
- Aldehyde dehydrogenase family 3 member A1 (ALDH3A1), also known as ALDHIII or ALDH3, is a 50 kDa cytoplasmic protein.
- ALDHs play a major role in detoxifying alcohol-derived acetaldehyde and participate in the metabolism of corticosteroids, biogenic amines, neurotransmitters, and lipid peroxidation (Probable).
- ALDH3A1 oxidizes medium and long chain aldehydes into non-toxic fatty acids and preferentially oxidizes aromatic aldehyde substrates (PubMed:1737758). Related references: PMID:1737758
- Comprises about 50% of corneal epithelial soluble proteins and may help prevent corneal damage from ultraviolet light (By similarity).
- Highly expressed in stomach, esophagus, and lung; low expression in liver and kidney.
- Key post-translational modifications include acetylation, and the enzyme is an NAD/NADP-dependent oxidoreductase involved in lipid metabolism.
