Biological Background: AIF Function and Localization

• The full-length AIF functions as an NADH oxidoreductase and, upon apoptotic stimulation, is released from mitochondria to the cytosol and nucleus, where its soluble form AIFsol binds DNA and induces parthanatos (caspase-independent chromatin fragmentation) (PMID:20362274, PMID:27178839).
