Biological Background: AHCYL1 Function and Localization

• AHCYL1 encodes S-adenosylhomocysteine hydrolase-like protein 1, also known as IRBIT (IP3Rs binding protein released with IP3), DCAL, and putative adenosylhomocysteinase 2. Alternative splicing produces multiple isoforms.
• Acts as a multifaceted cellular regulator coordinating epithelial HCO3(-) and fluid secretion, mRNA processing, and DNA replication.
• Regulates intracellular Ca2+ signaling by interacting with ITPR1 to control ER-mitochondria Ca2+ transfer and apoptosis, in cooperation with BCL2L10. Related references: PMID:27995898
