Biological Background: ADH5/GSNOR Function and Localization
- ADH5, also known as alcohol dehydrogenase class-3 or GSNOR, is a zinc-containing, NAD-dependent oxidoreductase that belongs to the alcohol dehydrogenase family.
- It catalyzes the oxidation of long-chain primary alcohols and the detoxification of formaldehyde via S-(hydroxymethyl)glutathione oxidation. Related references: PMID:8460164
- ADH5 is remarkably inefficient at oxidizing ethanol, distinguishing it from other class I alcohol dehydrogenases. Related references: PMID:8460164
- The enzyme also oxidizes long-chain omega-hydroxy fatty acids such as 20-HETE, generating both intermediate aldehydes and dicarboxylic acid products. Related references: PMID:16081420
