Biological Background: ADAMTS2 Function and Localization
- ADAMTS2 (A disintegrin and metalloproteinase with thrombospondin motifs 2), also known as procollagen I N-proteinase (PC I-NP), is a secreted metalloprotease belonging to the ADAMTS family.
- It plays a critical role in collagen fibril assembly by cleaving the N-terminal propeptides of type I and type II procollagens, a step essential for proper collagen maturation and deposition in the extracellular matrix.
- ADAMTS2 does not act on type III collagen, indicating substrate specificity among fibrillar collagens.
