Biological Background: Acetyl-coenzyme A synthetase 2-like, mitochondrial Function and Localization

  • ACSS1 encodes acetyl-coenzyme A synthetase 2-like, mitochondrial, also known as acetate--CoA ligase 2, acetyl-CoA synthetase 2 (AceCS2), and propionate--CoA ligase.
  • Catalyzes the synthesis of acetyl-CoA from acetate and CoA, with acetate as the preferred substrate; propionate is utilized with much lower affinity. Related references: PMID:16788062
  • Under ketogenic conditions, provides acetyl-CoA for oxidation and contributes to thermogenesis, using acetate as an alternative fuel when carbohydrates are limited.
  • Localizes to the mitochondrial matrix, where mitochondrial fatty acid metabolism occurs.
  • Contains ATP-binding and nucleotide-binding motifs, typical of the acyl-CoA synthetase short-chain family.
