Biological Background: ACSL1 Function and Localization
- ACSL1, also known as long-chain-fatty-acid--CoA ligase 1, is a key enzyme in fatty acid metabolism, converting free long-chain fatty acids into their acyl-CoA derivatives for downstream lipid synthetic and degradative pathways. Related references: PMID:21242590 PMID:22633490 PMID:24269233
- The enzyme preferentially activates palmitoleate, oleate, and linoleate among long-chain fatty acids. Related references: PMID:24269233
- ACSL1 preferentially converts arachidonate rather than epoxyeicosatrienoic acids (EETs) or hydroxyeicosatrienoic acids (HETEs) (By similarity).
- Localizes primarily to the mitochondrial outer membrane, peroxisomal membrane, microsomal membrane, and endoplasmic reticulum membrane, consistent with its roles in both anabolism and catabolism of lipids.
- Highly expressed in liver, heart, skeletal muscle, kidney, and erythroid cells, with lower expression in brain, lung, placenta, and pancreas.
