Biological Background: ABCG2 Function and Localization

• ABCG2 (also known as BCRP, MXR, CDw338) is a broad substrate specificity ATP-dependent transporter of the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) family that actively extrudes a wide variety of physiological compounds, dietary toxins, and xenobiotics from cells. • Crucial for porphyrin homeostasis, ABCG2 mediates the export of protoporphyrin IX from mitochondria to cytosol and from cytosol to extracellular space, and also exports heme.
