Biological Background: ABCB4 Function and Localization
- ABCB4 functions as an energy-dependent phospholipid floppase that translocates phosphatidylcholine from the inner to the outer leaflet of the canalicular membrane, a critical step for biliary lipid secretion and protection of the biliary tree from bile salt detergent activity. - The protein is required for proper phospholipid bile formation and indirectly promotes cholesterol efflux from hepatocytes into the canalicular lumen in the presence of bile salts. Related references: PMID:24045840
