Biological Background: ABCB11 (BSEP) Function and Localization

• ABCB11, also known as Bile salt export pump (BSEP), is an ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter that mediates the ATP-dependent transport of major hydrophobic bile salts across the canalicular membrane of hepatocytes, thereby playing a crucial role in hepatic bile acid homeostasis and biliary lipid secretion.
