Biological Background: ANT2/SLC25A5 Function and Localization

• ANT2 (ADP/ATP translocase 2), encoded by the SLC25A5 gene, is a member of the solute carrier family 25 and functions as a mitochondrial inner membrane ADP:ATP antiporter; it is also known as adenine nucleotide translocator 2.
• Its primary role is to catalyze the exchange of cytosolic ADP for mitochondrial ATP, driving ATP synthesis and cellular energy supply via an alternating access mechanism (By similarity).
• ANT2 also mediates mitochondrial uncoupling by acting as a proton transporter, requiring free fatty acids as cofactors, which uncouples the proton gradient to produce heat and fine-tune energy metabolism (By similarity).
