  • Alpha-1-antitrypsin (SERPINA1), also known as alpha-1 protease inhibitor, alpha-1-antiproteinase, and serpin A1, is a member of the serpin superfamily.
  • It acts as an inhibitor of serine proteases, primarily targeting elastase, with moderate affinity for plasmin and thrombin, and irreversibly inhibits trypsin, chymotrypsin, and plasminogen activator.
  • An aberrant form of the protein inhibits insulin-induced NO synthesis in platelets, decreases coagulation time, and has proteolytic activity against insulin and plasmin.
  • SERPINA1 is a reversible chymotrypsin inhibitor that also inhibits elastase but not trypsin; a major physiological role is protecting the lower respiratory tract against proteolytic destruction by human leukocyte elastase.
  • The protein is secreted and found in the endoplasmic reticulum, extracellular space, and extracellular matrix.
