• AK5 (adenylate kinase isoenzyme 5, also known as ATP-AMP transphosphorylase 5) is a nucleoside monophosphate kinase that catalyzes the reversible transfer of the terminal phosphate group between nucleoside triphosphates and monophosphates.
• The enzyme is active on AMP and dAMP with ATP as the phosphate donor; when GTP is used as donor, it phosphorylates AMP, CMP, and to a small extent dCMP. It also exhibits broad nucleoside diphosphate kinase activity.
• Encoded by the AK5 gene, alternative splicing produces multiple isoforms of this kinase.
• AK5 is localized predominantly in the cytoplasm.
• Expression of AK5 is brain-specific, making it a candidate marker for studying neuronal function and neurological disorders.
