Biological Background: Histone H4 Function and Localization

Histone H4 is a core component of the nucleosome, the fundamental repeating unit of chromatin. Nucleosomes wrap and compact DNA, limiting its accessibility to cellular machineries involved in transcription, replication, repair, and chromosomal stability. Related references: UniProt P62805

H4 localizes primarily to the nucleus and chromosomes. Acetylated H4 has been shown to localize to the nucleus in specific cell types, such as spermatids during step 11 of differentiation (by similarity). Related references: UniProt P62805

Histone H4 undergoes extensive post-translational modifications (PTMs), including acetylation, methylation, phosphorylation, citrullination, and ubiquitination.
